Teenagers aged 10 to 18
ICAN is a program where youth have an opportunity to work with several local chefs and are introduced to basic and advanced cooking skills, safe food handling techniques, proper knife skills, use of a variety of kitchen appliances both commercial and traditional, and proper clean up and sanitizing practices. They also have the opportunity to hear from nutritionists who will speak to the value of healthier food choices. They have opportunities to participate in several community outreach initiatives, including touring and assisting at the local food bank, preparing meals for local church and community fundraisers and putting on a "Master Chef" style dinner of their own. Other field trips include a visit to a professional kitchen, and fine dining experiences. Our goal is to provide these youth with an opportunity to gain valuable kitchen experience that could potentially assist them in securing a job, or at the very least give them the confidence to prepare meals at home for their family and friends.
